It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme., allowing readers to easily search your site for posts and pages you’ve written in the past. Here’s an example of what it looks like in the Twenty Eleven theme:

Once you add the widget to your sidebar from Appearance -> Widgets, you’ll see that the widget settings look like this:
