Weekly Meetings

    The updates for IRC and other items are posted at https://make.wordpress.org/updates/ and the support ones are tagged with support. I subscribe to that blog so I get the updates from the other teams when posted.
    
    It’s a good source of info re the other teams. Lately the updaters have been posting a link to the IRC logs too which does let readers review the whole chat as well. I started doing that as well after I noticed Eric Amundson had done so.

Hello,

I’ve been noticing over a long period that we have some ‘semi-regulars’ (we know their nick and they do help once in awhile) bash WordPress.

What concerns me is that the non-regular users see that such people are actually helping. And with the help, they add lines like ‘WordPress is not very well coded’, ‘It’s junk’ and so on. The non-regular users might end up think that these people actually represent WordPress.

My question is – for discussion tonight I guess – do we have some recommended way to deal with such people? Some of them are likely reasonable but frustrated with WordPress.

I’ve thought of just out-right telling them not to make general bad comments about WordPress. But that may come off as being overly protective.

Perhaps we should do something like – add a rule that says no crap-talking about open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. projects?

  Maybe “Try to be respectful and helpful if you want to use this IRC room.” I would really rather find something positive to aim it as, instead of “Stop being negative nancies….”

  I can assure you that telling them to not be a negative nanny or actually having a rule to that effect will not have the desired effect. In some cases it could be possible to draw them out to focus on a specific concrete issue, then since they are such experts, encourage them to create a patch and submit a TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. ticket so they can be instrumental in resolving the issue. But that’s a fringe case. Most of the time they don’t want to help, they are content to sit around and snipe.
  
  There’s not anything anyone can do in the current IRC format about this other than ignore them. When they can’t get anyone to take the bait, they tend to fade away eventually. The problem is all it takes is one other person to take the bait and it becomes a feeding frenzy. They feed off each other and generally monopolize the chat, bashing this and that At that point asking them to be respectful of those that are trying to seek help is about all you can do.
  
  It’s difficult, but usually ignoring them is the best action. They are really seeking attention, when they are not rewarded, the activity usually stops. When it does get out of hand, then someone needs to say something. Focus on respect and being a good community member. “Don’t do that” never works well.

    This is true and leading by example is the best way to do it. But maybe having some verbiage about focusing on positives can be helpful.
    
    Rules are always an odd thing for a volunteer community effort. Yes, people are expected to behave but you don’t want to discourage people with rules and regulations…

Now that a .editorconfig is file is in coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. this should be added to the handbook/s/getting started/contribute guides.
