Hey, I have a question. So, Bulgrian for WordPress 3.5.x is completed on translate.wordpress.com, but the Bulgarian team is kinda inactive.. the latest version with Bulgarian is 3.2.1 according to bg.wordpress.org… and I would really like to use the full Bulgarian translation, becuse I updated to the new versions when I saw that the Bulgarian team is not updating WP anymore, and now I have some stuff in Bulgarian and some in English… BUT when I download the .po and .mo file from the translation it doesn’t have all of the strings… the strings are missing from the file, not that they are not translated… what to do?

Either language code is missing from wp-config-sample.php or there are no translation files. Otherwise, this should be translated.

Normally, but this screen is different. We can’t read wp-config-sample.php to check the language code (WordPress would break if we tried to include it), but we also don’t need to. Any localized release downloaded from WordPress.org not only includes a change in wp-config-sample.php for WPLANG, but also a line in wp-includes/version.php called $wp_local_package.
So this seems to tell me that you have language files in place (based on your inquiry) but nothing in wp-config-sample.php unless you added it yourself. The only other way this page could be in English is if you updated the install into English, not removing the existing language files but removing the line from version.php, and then lost your wp-config.php file.
Regardless, this isn’t a bug in core, and I don’t see anything we could do more effectively. It’ll work almost every time.

So running a fresh install will always display the first screen in english? I tried the localized package and also the original (then placing files after), neither worked.

I was translating bbPress and then download the po mo, why the translation doesn’t match the available plugin pack? I had to update the po from pot in plugin pack but that has 733 strings, while the glotpress says 842 strings. Is there something wrong?

Quick question. Where should I keep a log of the changes made in translation? I thought of keeping a handbook with some translation rules on the Rosetta site.

I think the best would be to use a wiki page, or forum.
Though I should probably send a patch for glotpress so we can have a feed (with changes you make) for integration with profiles.wordpress.org-

I’ve a couple of doubts:
In Aragonese team, we have completed and validated the core strings: translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp/dev/an/ , continents & cities as well as 2010, 2011 and 2012 themes… (admin, and network/admin will arrive later). Does it makes sense to import them into ver 3.3 (especially if most strings were common) to try and have a 3.3 package?I’ve also come across this glotpress instance at wordpress.com where one can translate “wordpress.com” http://translate.wordpress.com/projects/wpcom . I understand we’re localizing the software at wordpress.org, and in wordpress.com one translates the strings of the “website” wordpress.com , so that one can access wordpress.com through the interface in one’s language. Am I right? But still I wonder if wordpress.com allows to use all available languages, or it is necessary to have wp.com translated into one language before users can use it in their blogs hosted in wp.com.

It only makes sense if you plan on releasing a 3.3.x package (3.4 isn’t scheduled for right now, and there’s always the possibility of 3.3.2, etc.). That said, the import process should take care of almost all strings automatically.
