    Android 2.4 Beta: Notifications

Screen Shot 2013-05-24 at 2.36.55 PM
Looking for something to do this weekend? Version 2.4 of WordPress for Android is ready for testing. This release adds an all-new notifications view as well as integration with Google Cloud Messaging so that you can get notified as soon as something happens on your blog.

We’re looking for a few brave folks to try this out. Keep in mind that it is beta software. To take advantage of the new notifications feature, you’ll need to have a site at WordPress.com or be running the Jetpack plugin on your self-hosted site. You can find the WordPress.com sign in on the Settings page of the app.

We’ve also added some smaller new features as well:

    • Added new menu button that conforms to the new Holo guidelines for menu drawers announced at Google I/O last week.
    • Moved settings and sign out option to overflow menu

After you install the update and are signed in to WordPress.com you should start receiving notifications when stuff happens on your site. You can leave an anonymous comment on your blog to test it out if you aren’t getting much traffic at the moment :)

Please give it a try and comment here if you have any issues or suggestions!

Lastly, GLaDOS approves of this effort:

Weekly dev chat summary for Feb 27, 2013

    Chat log.

    Agenda

    • WPWindowsPhone app upgrades
    • WPAndroid UI progress
    • WPiOS
    • Handbook progress
    • WPBB10

    WPWindowsPhone app upgrades

Version 2.0 has been approved! We are working on the launch post, but the app is already available to users. We are moving on to version 2.1 which will support comment push notifications!

    WPAndroid UI progress

It’s looking really good. Most activities have been converted to the ActionBar, and the MenuDrawer has been tweaked to operate smoothly. Still a bit more left to do, including getting design comps and implementing them.

    WPiOS

Version 3.5 came out last week with a nasty bug, but thankfully we were able to get a bug fix out quickly. There’s a few less annoying bugs reported that should probably be fixed for a 3.5.2 release. No progress on version 3.6 yet.

    Handbook progress

Handbook is looking better. We noted that there is still a lot of non-app specific content to be written, maybe some folks can jump in and write those.

    WPBB10

After 3 weeks in review, the app was rejected for an unknown reason :( We are reaching out to our BB contact to see what’s up.

    Next week

The next dev chat will be on March 6, 2013 at 16:00 UTC. Mark your calendar and join us in #wordpress-mobile on Freenode.

on the 3.5.2 update is it going to fix the Landscape view while writing a post on the Ipad?

      • Isaac Keyet 10:47 pm on March 23, 2013 Permalink | Reply

We’re looking into it but can’t promise a fix in the next version. The other pending issues are more important since they impact basic usage. Thanks for your patience as we work this out.

I updated the app on my 4s today and it doesn’t work. Only nonresponsive “Photo” and “Settings” show up at the bottom. Can I get the old version until the bugs are worked out? Thanks!

        • Dan 5:57 pm on February 22, 2013 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, it’s a bug :( But there’s a workaround! Just swipe the grey bar at the top from left-to-right.

Just a quick heads up that @willnorris has been granted commit access to WPAndroid trunk. Will is helping out with the UI update, particularly in converting the app to use a slide-out menu menu drawer. Congrats Will!

Mobile Dev Chat Summary for Nov 28, 2012

    View chat log.

    Agenda

    • Mobile handbook
    • WPiOS Sounds release
    • WPWindowsPhone progress
    • WPAndroid UI Idea

    Mobile Handbook

We’re going to create a WordPress mobile handbook to help new contributors get up to speed quickly when wanting to help out with all things mobile. Some notes:

    • We will have a main overview page that will link off to specific instructions on contributing to each app.
    • We should also include information for stuff outside of the apps, such as responsive design.
    • Each app lead is responsible for writing the page with instructions on getting set up and contributing to the app.
    • A google doc spreadsheet is going to be made by the weekend that will help us get the basic outline created for the Handbook.

    WPiOS Sounds Release

    • App was submitted on Monday!
    • We’re not done with sounds, we’d like to continue iterating on them when possible.

    WPWindows Phone Progress

    • Still waiting on version 1.7.1 to be approved from Microsoft.
    • Good progress has been made on version 1.8, which includes better comment moderation support.

    WPAndroid UI Idea

    • For the next release (Date TBD) we’d like to create an Android 3.0 or higher version of the app that can use the ‘Holo’ theme and also make use of the native action bar.
    • We’ll split the APK distribution so that we can still offer the older UI version of the app to Android 2.3 or lower users.

    Next chat

Join us for the next weekly chat Wednesday at 1600 UTC on irc.freenode.net in the #WordPress-Mobile room.

Hi there, I’ve put together a spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiTZlIvtDmPEdDQxQkV6bGdTN3VWWHVhYlpEU0NENWc

You’ll see the main sections, and you can insert a line underneath the sections for the individual document title. Use – to show a hierarchy. I’ve added some content so you can see what I mean.

I suggest using the following workflow:

      1. Create the table of contents.

Add all of the titles of the individual articles you need. Move the rows around to create the table of contents. This means you’ll have a complete list of things that need to be written when you get started.

      2. Start Writing

Author puts their name in the Author column, creates page and adds a link. Change the status to In Progress. When you’re done change Status to Needs Editor. It’ll be looked at by an editor. When they’re happy they’ll assign a proofreader. When the proofreader is done they’ll mark it as complete.

Comments can be added to the comments section – this could be on issues you’ve got, or suggestions from the editor.

      Where will be build it?

      There are a few options:

      1. Build it on make.wordpress.org/events/handbook
      2. Create another site and then migrate it when we’re done.

I was naturally thinking about building it on events/handbook/ but it could actually be good to set up a site and build it on there. That way we can use something like Edit Flow for comments, create tags and custom statuses, and have a bit more control. Then when the content is done we could migrate it to make.wordpress.org/events/handbook

I don’t mind either way though, and would appreciate any input or thoughts you guys have on it.

Just an update – @nacin says we can have any tools we need, I guess once 3.5 is out and the core team has had time to wind down. In the meantime, let’s use the spreadsheet so we can keep track of things and build on make/mobile/handbook

Hi there, we have figured out the authors for each sections and a rough outline. I can’t seem to edit the spreadsheet though, can you make it editable?

          • Siobhan 11:54 am on December 7, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Sorry about that – I’ve updated it now so you can edit.

    • WPWindowsPhone 1.7 Discussion

    WPAndroid 2.2. Launch Update

    3.5 XML-RPC Improvements

    • Patch for #21397 was reviewed with some feedback, and @markoheijnen updated it and added a new patch. Team is doing their best to get this in 3.5 still.

    WPWindowsPhone 1.7 Discussion

    • A bit of trac cleanup for 1.7 has been done, but more needed. @irbrad will review the milestone.
    • @daniloercoli has picked up a few tickets and will likely start dev next week.
    • We discussed how to get up and running with the Windows Phone 8 SDK.

Revisions has been added to core now. I still want to double check it. I also did a check on the new user methods (#18428) and found a bug that wp.getUsers can’t return everything.

Now looking into the rest of the tickets for 3.5 and hoping to get some improvements on media #21085 but that is going to be tricky since we passed the hard freeze date

Dev Chat Summary During this week's dev chat…

During this week’s dev chat we had a lot to talk about, especially with regards to WPiOS. Here’s a summary:

    WPiOS 3.1 Lessons Learned

    • Overall we thought the launch went quite well for such a large update.
    • We discussed how good it would have been to have an external beta team so that we could have caught some of the issues before launch. But, it turns out that it’s against Apple’s TOS to distribute the app to anyone outside of your organization so it looks like we can’t really do betas that way. One idea we had was to post clear instructions on how to set up Xcode to build and run the app in the simulator. That way if people are interested they can at least try out new versions of the app that way. It’s not ideal at all, but it is legal :)

WPiOS 3.1.1 and on to 3.1.2

    • We were pleased that the 3.1.1 update made it through testing so quickly. The update fixed a lot of issues including the stats access problem for most users. The post format crash is totally gone as well, which was one of the major crash reports.
    • We’re aiming to have 3.1.2 wrapped up and submitted by the weekend. There’s actually not too many tickets at the moment so we should be able to make it.

    WPiOS 3.2

    • We’re hoping to get started on this next week, if WPiOS 3.1.2 launches and is stable.
    • I am going to take a look at the roadmap and prioritize the tickets to get rid of the clutter in trac. Will also add a release summary.
    • @irbrad has already done some great work with the visual editor and is ready to commit the first rev of it as soon as 3.1.2 is finalized.
    • @beaucollins and @daniloercoli are the leads for the notifications area.
    • @koke is going to work on changing the settings to be within the app

    WPAndroid

    • Launched 2.1.5 update to Google Play this morning
    • We have a new contributor helping out with tickets. I’m assisting as needed there.

    WPBB

    • Last week I put @daniloercoli in touch with some RIM contacts I wrangled up, hopefully they can help with the uploading issue we’ve been experiencing for some months now.
