There are many ways in which it is possible to contribute to Documentation team. To help you decide where to start looking, we’ll present here possibilities based on your skillset.

First make sure you have access to Slack and then go to #docs channel.

Who is end user?

End user is someone who uses WordPress mainly to create content (publish posts and pages) and modify the way website looks and behaves through admin screens, Dashboard, using themes, plugins and site options.

What can I do?

Depending on your experience and language skills (native English speaker or not), you can help with documentation for end users:

  • Following guidance in articles and checking if advices are in fact helpful.
  • Proofreading existing pages – making sure that content and screenshots are up to date and links are not broken etc.
  • Migrating remaining articles from Codex to staging and its new home.
  • Writing missing pages if there’s a need.

I want to do this. Now what?

End user documentation is project named HelpHub. For contributing to HelpHub content you should contact Akira Tachibana (@atachibana). PingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” @atachibana in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. or send him Direct Message and you’ll get further directions and all the help to get started.

Designer

End user documentation, AKA HelpHub, is still in development phase and your input as a designer would be very valuable.

What can I do?

Development of HelpHub is maintained through GitHub repository. You can go through the existing issues and offer your opinions and suggestions, or you can create new issues for anything you think needs fixing on staging or production sites.

Developer

As a developer you can help in several Documentation team projects. This is also a great opportunity for you to learn and grow as a developer. Theme and plugin development handbooks are shared effort between Documentation, Theme Review and Plugins Review teams. To help with its content contact either Jon Ang (@kenshino) or Drew Jaynes (@drewapicture).

Javascript

Even though there’s still no code reference for JavascriptJavaScript JavaScript or JS is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. WordPress makes extensive use of JS for a better user experience. While PHP is executed on the server, JS executes within a user’s browser. https://www.javascript.com/., a huge effort has been put in writing inline documentation for it. There are just a few people working on this and we’re always looking for new contributors to help them out.

Gutenberg

Documentation for GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ is split into documentation for developers and end users (content creators). End user documentation is led by Femy Praseeth @femkreations and developer documentation is (vacant for now) in #docs channels. Check out the Documentation Issues Tracker > Good First Issues on GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ for tasks to get started.
