Backbone.js docs discussion thread

At the theme/pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party dev handbook office hours yesterday, we discussed getting some docs together to help our wonderful WordPress developers make use of the library. @kadamwhite has volunteered to take on this task, so I’m starting this thread for general discussion of it.

In terms of readership, I think you can assume a good knowledge of PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. http://php.net/manual/en/intro-whatis.php. in the reader, and no knowledge of backbone.js In terms of general structure, here are some elements that would be good to see incorporated:

Introduction to backbone.js for WP developers
structuring your files
making use of backbone.js in WP
practical examples
possibly something on troubleshooting?

@kadamwhite wants to brainstorm some examples so please add some to this thread. We should have something basic, intermediate, and advanced, and hopefully they should be making use of WP.

Also, he’s going on a backbone.js course pretty soon so he’ll be able make use of all the knowledge for us!

As more and more JS makes its way into WordPress, we may need to make more of these types of documents to make sure that developers are able to play with their new toys.

I think we absolutely should include Underscore, to the extent that it might even be better to start there. Underscore is in many ways the backbone of backbone, and an extremely powerful toolset in its own right. I feel that understanding its ins and outs could dramatically improve one’s thinking while implementing Backbone collections.

Ryan: As Siobhan mentioned, we’re starting by brainstorming good use-cases for backbone, starting with ways to use it to enhance functionality within the admin area. With that in mind, any thoughts you have on what you personally are considering doing with Backbone would be useful.

  Let’s start with underscore then.
  
  I’d like this to be very much an educational document to handhold people through the process of making use of the libraries. A person should be able to start at the beginning and work their way through it. When they’re done they should be able to use backbone.js and underscore.js. Of course, it won’t be exhaustive, but they should then equipped to do further learning in the bb.js docs etc.
