I can look into spending some time with the twentytwelve tickets. Hopefully this afternoon. It’ll be a good fit for me since I’ve done mostly theme development

Hi Nacin. I highlighted the WP Retina 2x plugin (does this exactly: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/21038 ) at http://wpmu.org/wordpress-retina/ and spoke with a popular theme framework company, asking if their theme was “Retina-fied”. They said it’s not (I don’t know of one that is, but it’d be a USP to promote) and that they’re waiting for WP Core to do its thing with Retina and then they’ll figure out how to implement Retina for their theme. Personally, at the minimum, I just really want a folder of 2x images that are used, and I can mess around with it from there. But if they provide a 32×32 image and not the vector file or 2x image in the download, there’s no way for me to Retina-fy it. What I’m saying is that free and premium themes are looking to core to piggyback off of — whatever core does to implement Retina display integration.
I also like Genesis’ suggestion of using pictogram font(s) instead of actual images.
I’m guessing none of this is really news to you, but I thought I’d do what I can — sharing experiences — to help.
