Found a bugbug A bug is an error or unexpected result. Performance improvements, code optimization, and are considered enhancements, not defects. After feature freeze, only bugs are dealt with, with regressions (adverse changes from the previous version) being the highest priority.? Create a ticket in the bug tracker.
Want to contribute? Get started quickly with tickets marked as good first bugs for new contributors or join a bug scrub. There’s more on the reports page, like patches needing testing, and on feature projects page.

I’m interested in mentoring a student on a “Unit” testing related project to improve our test coverage, get automated regressionregression A software bug that breaks or degrades something that previously worked. Regressions are often treated as critical bugs or blockers. Recent regressions may be given higher priorities. A "3.6 regression" would be a bug in 3.6 that worked as intended in 3.5. testing running or something in that area.

Anyone still interested in mentoring that one, because I feel like tackling it 🙂 Btw, I’m a graduate student, I read somewhere on Google FAQ that it still counts.

  Yes, a student started on it last year but failed at midterm due to lack of progress and it made us all sad. And yes, grad students are eligible.

    That’s a pretty big task, but I believe I can do it. SVNSVN Subversion, the popular version control system (VCS) by the Apache project, used by WordPress to manage changes to its codebase. tie-in can be tricky, but that can be learnt. The big question that I’m having now is whether to implement this as a pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party, or as a fork of WordPress. Anyways, I would love to have a mentor to discuss more about this during the application period.

Plugins do this, but forks just create one more thing that needs to get synced up.

    Indeed. It’s actually probably best as a theme with a few additional dependencies. There was one called Quality Control that was since bought up… But it needed work for it to be an actual replacement for serious or large projects.

    dd32, Jane, Nacin: Thanks for the input! After thinking about it more, you’re right, forking is a bad idea. Originally I thought I need to modify my-sites.php and networknetwork (versus site, blog)/sites.php to support multiple repositories, but that seems to be an overkill, and I probably shouldn’t plan ahead that far.
    
    Nacin: I was leaning more towards using the existing adminadmin (and super admin) UIUI User interface for this. Each registered user already has that UI, so why duplicating the effort?

I’m interested in mentoring again. I’m flexible on the project, but I’d really like to see someone identify where WP can most benefit from the new PHPPHP The web scripting language in which WordPress is primarily architected. WordPress requires PHP 5.6.20 or higher 5.2+ and MySQLMySQL MySQL is a relational database management system. A database is a structured collection of data where content, configuration and other options are stored. https://www.mysql.com/. 5 functionality we’re about to gain, implements the changes, and maybe even update our coding standards accordingly.

I also like to contribute to wordpress in this time GSoC. I need to know whether the “Wordpress Import/Export ” project in last GSoC is completed or not. If it is not completed I like to do that project in this time GSoC.

  We are not yet putting together our recommended projects lists, as we first have to ID who our mentors will be. The best thing to do in the meantime is to start getting to know the WP codebase better, reviewing tracTrac An open source project by Edgewall Software that serves as a bug tracker and project management tool for WordPress. tickets and past commits (a bunch of stuff has changed with 3.1), and start attending the dev chats to get a better understanding of the project. We’ve had bad luck in the past with students who pop up out of nowhere and claim a project without spending some time getting to know the code and developer community a little bit first. Contributing a few patches between now and when we are ready to start talking specific projects (if we are accepted into the program) is the best thing you can do to increase your chances of being accepted when the time comes.

    For the last gsoc I also submitted a proposal for WordPress Import/Export process project idea. At that time I already had developed the import process and my proposal didn’t accepted last time. So I’m trying it again this time. Thank you.

I’d be interested in mentoring this summer – I would love to see the other side of GSoC. I don’t have any specific projects in mind to mentor on, but as you know I’ve worked on a lot of different things so I can jump in for anything.
