It’s that time of year again… time to…

It’s that time of year again… time to brainstorms some potential projects for Google Summer of Code students. Naturally, students will propose things they are interested in, but we need to have an Ideas page posted by next week with at least a handful of projects we’d be interested in mentoring. Please use this thread to suggest WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. projects that would fit into a summer and could be handled by a smart student .We also need to wrangle some more mentors from the core contributor pool. Potential mentors have a bunch of committed patches, are well-respected in the community for their coding skills and communication style, and have the time to work with a student this summer. If you are intersted in being a mentor, leave a comment here and I’ll follow up with you via email. For project suggestions, please be very specific, and identify how the project would benefit core. I’d be interested in mentoring.

As far as ideas for projects, it would be great to put some work into how WordPress routes requests (and how it generates the corresponding URLs for the pages requested).

I’ve been trying to brainstorm some ideas because I hope to apply again this summer. Here’s one project that I’ve seen brought up recently and would be a cool project for a Summer of Code Student.

Project Suggestion:

Improve WordPress Export/Import Feature

The WordPress Exporting/Importing system needs more functionality and should be a main focus for WordPress because importing and exporting blogblog (versus network, site) content is extremely important.

Improvements to the Export/Import Feature could include things such as:
- Import that connects directly to other blogs/databases for the content transfer.
- Import that can run from an already uploaded file (so people can ftp/ssh very large XML files that PHPPHP The web scripting language in which WordPress is primarily architected. WordPress requires PHP 5.6.20 or higher would time out on)
- Export filters such as the ones already suggested as a patchpatch A special text file that describes changes to code, by identifying the files and lines which are added, removed, and altered. It may also be referred to as a diff. A patch can be applied to a codebase for testing. @ https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/10317 – but with more functionality. Choose multiple categories, tags, etc, for site admins the ability to choose which blogs from MU to backup.
- Automatic backup – have a backup emailed to a specified email every x amount of time or FTPed to a remote server. This could be an action so people could write plugins for backing up to cloud services.
- Import/Export from more systems.

You say core projects so does the list only need to be things that can later be committed to core can be suggested? Would love to see a system to handle changing the domain/location of a WordPress installation. eg. Install a clean WordPress on a new server and then have the option to “transfer an existing installation” from another server through some form of authentication.

Not sure if this is the time or the place to suggest this sort of thing, but it strikes me as something that is separate enough for this kind of purpose.

We generally have the projects function as plugins, but the goal is for them to be so awesome that we can pull it into coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. Justin’s search APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. is a prime example. And the elastic theme started out with the idea that it could become the new core theme. If we had any GSoC projects intended to remain plugins forever, I would expect them to be core plugins.

1) An approval / deployment process that could better position WP as a robust CMS. A way to allow content / theme features to be deployedDeploy Launching code from a local development environment to the production web server, so that it's available to visitors. from a single instance to a development, staging and finally production environments as testing / sign-off is complete. The db merge / commit process would flag what changes are due to new code / content (to be rolled forward), changes due to environment (to be kept) or decisions to be made. WP-Hive (http://wp-hive.com/faq/) has some starting points to consider. Investigate what it would take to have WP feature compete with something like Red Dot or Interwoven without losing all the awesome that WordPress is.

Video content is really my main features for most of my blogs, so saving bandwidth is important.
