We were chatting in the office hoursOffice Hours Defined times when the Global Community Team are in the #community-events Slack channel. If there is anything you would like to discuss – you do not need to inform them in advance.You are very welcome to drop into any of the Community Team Slack channels at any time. today about coming up with some simple tags like Beginner, Novice, Advanced, etc. to describe the difficulty of the video. In some minor discussion a question was asked what the difference was between Beginner and Novice. We got a couple of different answers, so rather than discuss is in chat, let’s talk about it here.

What are your thoughts for difficulty level tags? Are Beginner, Novice, Advanced adequate? Do we think everyone will understand them? And GO! 🙂

Novice (N) � One who has a little information but needs the tools, skills and knowledge to understand and apply this information.
Beginner (B) One who has a general knowledge of the material and somewhat familiar with the terms and concepts but still needs very detailed information.
Intermediate (I) One who has the tools and information and can use them with some effort and assistance. Can follow step-by-step instructions to complete a task.
Advanced (A) One who has the tools and information and is comfortable with them and can apply them to the task at hand with ease and can explain the task for someone else to follow.

My two cent. Novice and beginner can be switched but I do think these are separate with different needs and skills.

  I also think that “novice” and “beginner” are easily confused. One thing to consider is how WordCamps also distinguish between talks. Typically if they offer multiple tracks, they tend to split it into User/Developer tracks. Maybe language like that?

Whatever is decided, I think it should be kept to 3 choices max. 2 would be even easier. I see this as less confusing for visitors. Also, less confusing for WC organizers, in the event we ask them to start adding these tags for us.

Also, let’s bear in mind that WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos will be more difficult to classify than something more focused (like how-to style videos) so we may need to keep these kind of broad. It’s easy to set up a leveling system for teaching curricula, but I’m not sure it’s so easy to do the same thing for WC style presentations. My $.02

  I agreed that if you only use two them User / Developer would be appropriate.
  
  I do believe, however, that this distinction between novice and beginner is important and useful. Even more so that the distinction between Intermediate and Advanced.
  
  Although I have no data to back it up (only personal experience and observation) I believe that more people are lost at this stage of learning (some never to return) than at all the others stages combined.
  
  Novice is like pre-school. If you have a good program then your chances of being successful in grade school (beginner) is greatly enhanced. You may not be at that level long but it is an important on to have.

Learn more. are no longer novice as you describe; they’ve had a chance to use WordPress, be seduced by it, and want to learn more about how to use it. They’re “grade school” level at least before they even show up at camp…
    
    I make beginner videos too, so I agree with everything you say, but for WordCamp videos I don’t know if the “novice” tag is as useful as it is for a how-to or other new user instruction. 🙂

I’m not sure I see the need, from a user’s perspective, of tagging a video as advanced or beginner. I think the beginners know who they are, and the advanced people know who they are, and there’s not much of an investment to watch for a few minutes and then skip to another video.

  I can see this point too. When I was first coming to wordpress.tv, I’d typically search and spend a few minutes looking at a video until I found the one needed. Now I usually know the speaker and what they typically talk about (user vs developer track, etc.) and am able to skip over the ones I wouldn’t want to watch.
